Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, is a life-saving hormone and neurotransmitter which is used in a range of emergency medical applications. It also occurs naturally in the body, particularly when an individual is extremely frightened, angry, injured or otherwise under a tremendous amount of stress, at which times it provides additional energy and enhances body functions.

The medication is most often used to:

  • Increase cardiac output during cardiac arrest or arrhythmia
  • Alleviate asthma or bronchospasm
  • Manage symptoms of anaphylaxis
  • Enhance local anesthetics and reduce blood loss during surgical procedures

Outside of a medical setting most people buy epinephrine to treat asthma or to have on-hand in case of anaphylaxis. While epinephrine, like any medication, can produce side effects, it is actually a surprisingly safe treatment---despite unfounded rumors to the contrary. Very few deaths can be attributed to epinephrine use in the more than 100 years of its use in the medical field; far more people die due to lack of access to the medication.

Epinephrine for Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening reaction to exposure to an allergen, such as peanuts or bee venom. Symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Swelling of face, tongue, throat, or lips;
  • Severe rash, hives or itching;
  • Severe confusion or disorientation.

In severe cases the above symptoms develop very rapidly and quickly become life-threatening---very often long before medical attention can be obtained. In these scenarios, epinephrine is the difference between life and death.

Outside of a hospital the most effective administration of epinephrine is via injection, such as with the well-known EpiPens, which are available in adult strength and junior strength. Anyone who has severe allergies, or who has a loved one with such allergies, should buy epinephrine injections---and learn how to use them---to have on-hand in an emergency, preferably in multiple locations; work or school, in the car, at home, and at other frequented locations.

Injections with EpiPens or similar products should be administered to the upper thigh at the first signs of a severe allergic reaction; typically 150 mg for children under 30 kilograms (66 pounds) and 300 mg for those over 30 kg. If significant improvements are not seen within 5 minutes, administer a second dose.

Immediately seek emergency medical attention, even if symptoms appear to be gone. Epinephrine is relatively short-acting and symptoms may return when it wears off. Additional doses may be administered as-needed in the interim if symptoms of anaphylaxis appear to be life-threatening. Excessive use of epinephrine should be avoided if possible, but is considerably less likely to result in death than anaphylaxis.

Epinephrine for Asthma & Bronchospasm

Epinephrine has been used for over 50 years to manage symptoms of asthma or bronchospasm from COPD, chronic bronchitis and other lung ailments. Administered via inhaler or nebulizer, it is inexpensive, fast-acting and highly effective, with few of the long-term side effects frequently experienced with other types of inhalers.

Unfortunately patients may find it difficult to buy epinephrine in inhaler form due to government bans on the propellent used in the inhalers. Though more costly and less convenient, it is possible to buy epinephrine for use in nebulizers, which still produces good results as far as reversing bronchospasm.

In cases of severe asthma attack when no inhalers or nebulizers are available, administering epinephrine by injection, such as with an EpiPen, will also provide relief. EpiPens contain relatively large doses, however, and should only be used to manage asthma or bronchospasm in true emergencies.
